Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours

Minutes divided by 60 gives decimal hours — the conversion table and payroll math you need.

At a glance

The Short Answer

Divide the minutes by 60 to get decimal hours: 45 minutes = 0.75 hours, 30 minutes = 0.5, 15 minutes = 0.25, and 20 minutes = 0.33. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, and at $20 per hour that pays $155.

Converting Full Time Values

Keep the whole hours and convert only the minutes: 3:36 becomes 3 + (36 / 60) = 3.6 hours, and 12:18 becomes 12 + 0.3 = 12.3 hours. Going the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 8.75 hours is 8 hours and 0.75 x 60 = 45 minutes, so 8:45.

Why Payroll Uses Decimal Hours

Pay rates are per hour, and multiplying $22.50 by 7 hours 40 minutes directly does not work — 40 minutes is not 0.40 of an hour. Converted properly, 7:40 is 7.67 hours, which at $22.50 pays $172.50. The time calculator above shows any total as decimal hours automatically, so you can add a day's or week's worth of intervals and read off the payroll-ready figure without converting anything by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 45 minutes in decimal hours?

0.75 hours, since 45 divided by 60 is 0.75. So 5 hours 45 minutes equals 5.75 hours.

What is 20 minutes as a decimal?

20 / 60 = 0.333, which rounds to 0.33 hours. For payroll, most systems round to two decimals.

Why is 0.5 hours not 50 minutes?

Because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. Half an hour is 30 minutes, and 50 minutes is 50 / 60 = 0.83 hours.

How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?

Multiply the decimal part by 60. For example, 4.35 hours is 4 hours plus 0.35 x 60 = 21 minutes, so 4:21.
