About Age Calculator

What is an Age Calculator?

An age calculator measures the exact time elapsed between your date of birth and any other date. Instead of rounding down to whole years the way we do in conversation, it breaks your age into years, months, and days, and converts the same span into totals such as weeks, days, hours, and minutes. It also reveals which day of the week you were born and counts down to your next birthday.

Because months have different lengths and leap years add an extra day to February, working out an exact age by hand is surprisingly easy to get wrong. This tool applies the same calendar rules used by governments, insurers, and hospitals, so the answer is precise to the day.

How to Use

  1. Select your date of birth in the Birth Date field.
  2. Pick a Target Date — it defaults to today, but any past or future date works.
  3. Click Calculate to see your exact age, totals in days, hours, and minutes, the weekday you were born, and the countdown to your next birthday.

How Exact Age Is Calculated

Exact age comes from subtracting the birth date from the target date one component at a time:

years = Y2 − Y1, months = M2 − M1, days = D2 − D1 (borrow when negative)

  • Y1, M1, D1 — the year, month, and day of the birth date
  • Y2, M2, D2 — the year, month, and day of the target date
  • Borrowing — if days is negative, add the length of the month before the target month (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and reduce months by 1; if months is then negative, add 12 and reduce years by 1

The borrowing step is where month length matters. Subtracting into January borrows 31 days from December, while subtracting into March borrows 28 days from February — or 29 in a leap year. A year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, and why 2100 will not be one either.

Worked Example

Suppose you were born on March 15, 1990 and want your age on January 20, 2026.

  1. Days: 20 − 15 = 5. No borrowing needed.
  2. Months: 1 − 3 = −2, so borrow one year: −2 + 12 = 10 months.
  3. Years: 2026 − 1990 = 36, reduced by the borrowed year to 35.

Your exact age is 35 years, 10 months, and 5 days. Converting the whole span into smaller units gives:

UnitTotal
Weeks1,870 weeks + 5 days
Days13,095
Hours314,280
Minutes18,856,800
Day of week bornThursday

Age Milestones Worth Celebrating

Round-number birthdays are not the only milestones worth marking. Using an average year length of 365.25 days, here is when some popular ones arrive:

MilestoneApproximate Age
1 million minutes1.9 years
5,000 days13.7 years
500 million seconds15.8 years
10,000 days27.4 years
1 billion seconds31.7 years
15,000 days41.1 years
20,000 days54.8 years
2 billion seconds63.4 years
25,000 days68.4 years

Someone born on March 15, 1990, for example, celebrated their 10,000th day alive on July 31, 2017, and passed one billion seconds around November 21, 2021.

Age Counting Conventions

The results above use the international system, where you are zero at birth and turn one on your first birthday. East Asian age reckoning — traditional in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam — counts a baby as one year old at birth and adds a year for everyone at the New Year instead of on individual birthdays, so a person's traditional age can be one or even two years higher than their international age. South Korea officially adopted the international system for legal and administrative purposes in 2023, though the traditional count is still used casually. Whenever precision matters — legal documents, medical forms, retirement eligibility — rely on the date-of-birth method this calculator provides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the age calculator account for leap years?

Yes. The calculator uses built-in calendar logic, so February has 29 days in leap years and every month borrows its correct length. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400.

How is my exact age in years, months, and days calculated?

Your birth date is subtracted from the target date component by component: days, then months, then years. If the day or month result is negative, the calculator borrows from the previous month or year, which is why the answer always matches the calendar exactly.

How many days old am I?

Enter your birth date and set the target to today; the Total Days field shows the full count. For example, someone born on March 15, 1990, was 13,095 days old on January 20, 2026.

What if I was born on February 29?

Leap-day birthdays are handled correctly. In non-leap years your birthday effectively falls on February 28 or March 1 depending on the convention used, and the day-count totals remain exact either way.

Can I calculate age for a future date?

Yes, set the target date to any future date to see how old you will be — useful for checking your age at a graduation, retirement, or any planned event.

What is East Asian age reckoning?

It is a traditional system in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam where a baby is considered one year old at birth and everyone gains a year at the New Year. It can make a person one or two years older than their international age.

Why is the next birthday countdown useful?

It shows exactly how many days, hours, and minutes remain until your next birthday, so you can plan celebrations or simply watch the date approach.
