How to Add Hours and Minutes Together

The carry-over method for adding time by hand, plus instant totals from the calculator above.

At a glance

The Short Answer

Add the hours and minutes separately, then carry every full 60 minutes into one extra hour. For example, 2:45 + 3:30: minutes give 45 + 30 = 75, which is 1 hour 15 minutes; hours give 2 + 3 + 1 = 6. The total is 6 hours 15 minutes.

Adding Seconds Too

The same carry rule applies one level down: every 60 seconds becomes a minute. Take 1:30:45 + 2:45:30. Seconds: 45 + 30 = 75, carry 1 minute and keep 15 seconds. Minutes: 30 + 45 + 1 = 76, carry 1 hour and keep 16 minutes. Hours: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4. Total: 4:16:15.

Adding Many Values at Once

Adding a long list by hand — a week's worth of tasks, a playlist, race splits — is where mistakes creep in, because each pair can trigger a carry. The calculator above accepts unlimited rows of days, hours, minutes, and seconds, handles every carry automatically, and shows the grand total as d:h:m:s plus equivalent total hours, minutes, and seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 2 hours 45 minutes plus 3 hours 30 minutes?

6 hours 15 minutes. The minutes sum to 75, which carries 1 hour and leaves 15 minutes; the hours sum to 5 plus the carried hour.

How do I add time that includes days?

Carry every 24 hours into one day, the same way 60 minutes carries into an hour. The calculator has a days field on every row and handles this automatically.

Why not just convert everything to minutes?

You can — convert each value to minutes, add them, then divide by 60 for hours. It works but is slow for long lists; the carry method or the calculator is faster.

Does the calculator show the total in different units?

Yes. Alongside the d:h:m:s total it shows equivalent total hours (with decimals), total minutes, and total seconds, so you can use whichever unit you need.
