Roof Pitch Multiplier Chart

Multiply your building footprint by the pitch factor to convert floor area into true roof area.

At a glance

How the Multiplier Works

A sloped roof covers more surface than the flat floor beneath it. The pitch multiplier converts footprint area into roof area: multiplier = √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²), where pitch is the rise in inches per 12 inches of horizontal run. Multiply length × width × multiplier and you have the roof's true surface area — the same formula the calculator above applies.

Worked Example

A 40 × 30 ft ranch (1,200 sq ft footprint) with a 6/12 pitch: 1,200 × 1.1180 = 1,341.6 sq ft of roof. That is 13.4 squares, which the calculator rounds to 41 bundles of shingles (13.4 × 3, rounded up), plus a 40 ft ridge on a gable roof.

Measuring Pitch Safely

You can measure pitch from inside the attic or from a ladder at the gable end: hold a 12-inch level horizontal against the rafter or roof edge and measure the vertical rise at the 12-inch mark. That rise number is your pitch — a 6-inch rise is a 6/12. Never measure from on top of a steep roof; the chart and calculator work just as well with an attic or ground-level measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pitch is most common on US homes?

Between 4/12 and 8/12 covers most American houses, with 6/12 a very common middle ground. Anything under 2/12 is considered low-slope and usually needs membrane roofing rather than shingles.

Does the multiplier work for hip roofs too?

Yes. When all four sides share the same pitch, the total sloped area is still footprint × multiplier — the hips redistribute the same area. The calculator uses this for both gable and hip tabs.

Why does a 12/12 roof add 41% more area?

A 12/12 roof rises one foot per foot of run, so each slope runs at 45 degrees. The sloped surface is the horizontal run times √2 ≈ 1.414, hence the 41.4% increase over the flat footprint.

How do I turn roof area into shingle bundles?

Divide the area by 100 to get squares, then multiply by 3 bundles per square and round up. A 1,342 sq ft roof is 13.42 squares, needing 41 bundles before the 10–15% waste allowance.
