How Many Square Feet Does a Bundle of Shingles Cover?
One bundle covers about 33 square feet; three bundles make one roofing square (100 sq ft).
At a glance
The Quick Answer
A bundle of standard asphalt shingles covers about 33.3 square feet. Shingles are packaged so that three bundles cover one roofing square — the 100-square-foot unit roofers use for all material estimates. Heavyweight designer shingles sometimes pack four bundles per square, so check the wrapper before ordering.

Roofing Estimate
Add 10-15% extra for waste and starter strips. Consult a roofer for precise estimates.
From Roof Area to Bundles
The math is two steps: divide roof area by 100 to get squares, then multiply by 3. The calculator above does both and rounds up, since you cannot buy a partial bundle. Some common roof sizes:
| Roof Area | Squares | Bundles (3 per square) |
|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 5.0 | 15 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 10.0 | 30 |
| 1,342 sq ft | 13.4 | 41 |
| 1,677 sq ft | 16.8 | 51 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 20.0 | 60 |
| 2,500 sq ft | 25.0 | 75 |
Then add 10–15% for waste: cutting at rakes, valleys, and hips, starter strips along the eaves, and spares for future repairs. A 51-bundle job should really ship 56–59 bundles.
Remember: Roof Area Is Not Floor Area
The 33 sq ft per bundle figure applies to sloped roof area, not the home's footprint. A 1,500 sq ft house at a 6/12 pitch has 1,677 sq ft of roof because of the slope — the pitch factor √(1 + (6/12)²) = 1.118 inflates every horizontal square foot. Enter your footprint dimensions and pitch above to get the true area before converting to bundles.
What Else Comes in a Square
Estimating by the square simplifies the whole order: felt or synthetic underlayment, hip-and-ridge caps, and even labor quotes are usually priced per square. Once the calculator gives you the square count, every other material line item follows from it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why three bundles instead of one per square?
A full square of shingles would weigh around 200–250 pounds — too heavy to carry up a ladder. Splitting it into three bundles of roughly 70–80 pounds keeps each package liftable.
Do all shingle types cover 33 sq ft per bundle?
Standard three-tab and most architectural shingles do. Premium or designer shingles are thicker and may pack only 25 sq ft per bundle (four per square), so confirm the coverage printed on the bundle.
How much does a bundle weigh?
Typically 60–80 pounds for architectural shingles. A 51-bundle job is close to two tons of material — most suppliers will rooftop-deliver, which is worth asking about.
Can I return unopened bundles?
Most suppliers accept returns of full, unopened bundles in good condition, which is why ordering the waste allowance up front is safer than running short mid-job and risking a color-lot mismatch.
