How Many Days After Your Period Do You Ovulate?

The honest answer: it depends on your cycle length — here is the math for every length.

At a glance

The Short Answer

Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period — not a fixed number of days after your last one. In a textbook 28-day cycle that works out to roughly 14 days after your period starts (cycle day 15); in a 24-day cycle it is day 11, and in a 35-day cycle, day 22.

The Rule Behind the Number

The first half of the cycle (the follicular phase) varies in length, but the second half (the luteal phase) stays close to 14 days. That is why the formula works backward: ovulation = first day of last period + (cycle length − 14) days.

Why Cycle Length Matters More Than the Calendar

Two women whose periods started on the same date can ovulate a week apart if their cycles differ. Measure your own cycle — from the first day of one period to the first day of the next — over a few months and enter the average above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I ovulate right after my period ends?

Usually not. In a 28-day cycle, bleeding ends around day 5-7 and ovulation arrives around day 15. In short cycles of 21-24 days, though, ovulation can come just a few days after bleeding stops.

Can I ovulate during my period?

It is rare but possible in very short cycles, since ovulation can fall as early as day 8 in a 21-day cycle. Sperm survival of up to 5 days is why pregnancy from period-time intercourse occasionally happens.

How long does the egg live after ovulation?

Only about 12-24 hours. That is why the fertile window is weighted toward the days before ovulation, when sperm can already be waiting.

What if I do not know my cycle length?

Track the start dates of your last few periods and average the gaps between them. Until then, 28 days is the standard default.
