Weighted GPA Calculator for AP Classes
How AP, IB, and honors bonuses push a GPA above 4.0 — with the math to prove it.
At a glance
How the AP Bonus Works
On a weighted scale, an A in an AP or IB class is worth 5.0 grade points instead of 4.0 — a full +1.0 bonus. Honors classes typically add +0.5, so an honors A is worth 4.5. Weighted GPAs can therefore climb well above the 4.0 unweighted ceiling.

Worked Example: Two AP-Level Courses
A student earns an A in Honors English (3 credits), an A in AP Calculus (4 credits), and an A− in regular History (3 credits):
| Course | Credits | Weighted Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honors English (A) | 3 | 4.5 | 13.5 |
| AP Calculus (A) | 4 | 5.0 | 20.0 |
| History (A−) | 3 | 3.7 | 11.1 |
| Total | 10 | 44.6 |
Weighted GPA = 44.6 ÷ 10 = 4.46. The same three grades on an unweighted scale give only (12.0 + 16.0 + 11.1) ÷ 10 = 3.91 — the weighting adds more than half a point.
How to Compute Yours Above
The calculator's 5.0 scale mirrors common high-school weighting, where an A earns 5.0, a B earns 4.0, and a C earns 3.0. Enter each advanced course with its credits and letter grade to see your weighted GPA, total credits, and grade points instantly.
A Word of Caution
Every high school weights differently — some cap bonuses, some weight only certain subjects, and many colleges recalculate every transcript on their own scale anyway. If your transcript shows both numbers, report both and let the admissions office do its own math.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 4.2 weighted GPA good?
Yes. A 4.2 weighted GPA means mostly A's in a course load heavy with AP or IB classes, which is competitive at selective colleges. Admissions offices still look at the rigor behind the number.
Does a B in an AP class beat an A in a regular class?
On most weighted scales they tie: a B in AP earns 4.0 points, the same as a regular A. Colleges often view the AP B more favorably because it signals a harder course.
Do colleges use my weighted or unweighted GPA?
Most recalculate both on their own internal scale. Some compare unweighted GPAs for fairness, then reward rigor separately by counting your AP, IB, and honors courses.
What is the highest weighted GPA possible?
With a +1.0 AP bonus, straight A's in a fully weighted schedule produces a 5.0. Schools offering extra weighting or dual-enrollment bonuses can push reported GPAs slightly higher.
