How to Calculate Cumulative GPA

Why averaging semester GPAs gives the wrong answer, and the quality-point method that gives the right one.

At a glance

The Short Answer

Your cumulative GPA is total quality points divided by total credits across every semester you have completed — not the average of your semester GPAs. Multiply each semester's GPA by its credits to recover its quality points, sum all semesters, then divide by the sum of all credits attempted.

Why Averaging Semester GPAs Fails

Semester GPAs only average cleanly when every term carries identical credit hours. A 15-credit semester counts more than a 12-credit one, so a plain average mis-weights your best and worst terms — sometimes by several hundredths of a point, enough to cross a 3.0 or 3.5 cutoff.

Worked Example

Suppose you finished fall with a 3.20 GPA over 15 credits and spring with a 3.53 GPA over 12 credits:

SemesterGPACreditsQuality Points
Fall3.201548.0
Spring3.531242.3
Cumulative2790.3

Cumulative GPA = 90.3 ÷ 27 ≈ 3.34. A naive average of 3.20 and 3.53 gives 3.37 — an overstatement, because the weaker fall semester carried more credits.

Do It Faster With the Calculator Above

You can verify any cumulative GPA by entering your courses from all semesters into the calculator above — the total grade points and total credits it reports are exactly the numerator and denominator of the cumulative formula. Leave out pass/fail and withdrawn courses, since they carry no grade points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do transfer credits count in my cumulative GPA?

Usually the credits transfer but the grades do not, so transferred courses count toward graduation but not toward your GPA at the new school. Policies vary, so check your registrar.

Does repeating a course replace the old grade?

Many schools replace the original grade with the new one for GPA purposes, but some average both attempts. Enter only the attempt that counts under your school's policy.

How do I estimate my GPA before grades are final?

Enter your expected letter grade for each current course along with past semesters' totals. The weighted result shows where you would land if those grades hold.

Is a 3.34 cumulative GPA rounded on transcripts?

Most schools report GPA to two decimal places and do not round up to meet cutoffs. A 3.34 stays a 3.34 even if a scholarship requires 3.35.
