Am I Ectomorph, Mesomorph, or Endomorph?

Two quick ways to find your somatotype — a wrist measurement or a four-question quiz.

At a glance

The Fast Answer

Divide your wrist circumference by your height (both in centimeters). For men, a ratio under 0.1045 points to ectomorph, 0.1045 to 0.1225 to mesomorph, and above 0.1225 to endomorph. Women use the same lower cutoff with mesomorph topping out at 0.1195. No tape handy? The four-question quiz above gets you an answer in under a minute.

What Each Type Looks Like

  • Ectomorph: naturally thin with a fast metabolism, long limbs, and narrow shoulders. Struggles to gain weight or muscle.
  • Mesomorph: athletic, well-defined build. Gains muscle and loses fat relatively easily and responds well to most training.
  • Endomorph: rounder, softer physique that stores fat easily and tends toward a slower metabolism.

A Worked Example

A man with a 17 cm wrist at 178 cm tall has a ratio of 0.0955 — under 0.1045, so ectomorph. The same man with a 19 cm wrist at 175 cm lands at 0.1086: mesomorph. A 21 cm wrist at 170 cm gives 0.1235, just over the 0.1225 line: endomorph. The calculator returns your ratio alongside the classification so you can see exactly where you fall.

Most People Are a Blend

Somatotypes are a framework, not a diagnosis. Most people land near a boundary and show a dominant type with traits from another — an ecto-mesomorph who is lean but builds muscle well, or an endo-mesomorph who is strong but gains fat easily. Use the result as a starting point for training and nutrition choices, not a fixed identity, and re-check after months of training to see how your build responds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my body type change over time?

Your underlying bone structure stays the same, but training and diet can shift how your body looks and behaves. Many people move from endomorph tendencies toward mesomorph ones after years of consistent resistance training.

Which body type is the rarest?

Pure mesomorphs and pure ectomorphs are both uncommon — most people are blends. Extreme endomorphs with very large frames relative to height are also rare.

Does the quiz or the wrist test give a better answer?

They measure different things: the wrist test estimates bone frame size, while the quiz captures how your body actually responds to food and training. If they disagree, the quiz usually reflects your lived reality better.

Is somatotyping scientifically accepted?

It is a useful coaching framework, not a strict medical classification. Modern sports science treats it as one input among many rather than a determinant of fitness potential.
