The Maximum Allowable Percentages
Army body fat standards tighten for younger soldiers and relax with age. The maximum for men is 20% at ages 17-20, rising to 26% at 40 and over. For women the limits run from 30% at ages 17-20 up to 36% at 40 and over.
| Age Group | Men — Max Body Fat | Women — Max Body Fat |
|---|---|---|
| 17 – 20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21 – 27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28 – 39 | 24% | 34% |

How Pass/Fail Is Decided
Soldiers who exceed the height-weight screening tables are measured with the circumference (tape) method: waist and neck for men, waist, hip, and neck for women, plugged into a logarithmic formula with height. If the estimated body fat is at or below the limit for the soldier's age and gender, the result is a pass.
Example Outcomes
A 35-year-old man whose measurements estimate 30.7% body fat fails against his 24% limit. A 22-year-old woman estimated at 31% passes her 32% limit by a single point — but the same 31% estimate would fail for an 18-year-old woman, whose cap is 30%. Age bracket alone can flip the result.
A Note on This Tool
This calculator is an estimation aid. Official body composition testing follows the procedures in AR 600-9, and the Army updates its policies periodically, so confirm current standards with your unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if a soldier fails the body fat standard?
Failing soldiers are typically flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program, which requires monitored progress toward the standard.
Are Army body fat standards the same as the other services?
No. Each branch sets its own limits and measurement procedures. Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps standards all differ from the Army's.
Is the tape test the first step in screening?
No. Soldiers are first checked against height-weight tables. The circumference tape test is used only for those who exceed the screening table weight.
Do the standards ever change?
Yes. The Army revises body composition policy from time to time, so always verify the current limits in the latest version of AR 600-9.
