Army Body Fat Calculator for Women

The women's tape test needs three measurements — neck, waist, and hips — plus height and age.

At a glance

How the Women's Test Works

For female soldiers the Army's circumference method uses three tape measurements: neck, waist at the narrowest abdominal point, and hips at the widest point. The formula adds waist and hip, subtracts neck, and combines that figure with height in a logarithmic equation to estimate body fat percentage.

21 – 2732%
28 – 3934%
40 and over36%

Notice the limits run about ten points above the male standards, reflecting normal physiological differences in essential body fat between men and women.

How the Bracket Changes the Verdict

An estimate of 33% passes for a 30-year-old woman (34% limit) but fails for a 21-year-old (32% limit). Age matters as much as the tape numbers, which is why the calculator asks for it. Select female above and the hip field appears automatically.

Getting Accurate Measurements

Measure the hips around the fullest part of the buttocks with the tape level, and the waist at the smallest abdominal circumference — not at the navel, which is the male measurement site. Take each reading two or three times and use the average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do women need a hip measurement but men don't?

Women carry proportionally more essential fat in the hip and thigh region, so the hip circumference helps the formula distinguish lean mass from fat mass for female bodies.

Are female body fat standards different from male standards?

Yes. Female maximums are roughly ten percentage points higher in every age bracket: 30-36% for women versus 20-26% for men.

Does pregnancy affect body fat testing?

Soldiers are exempt from body composition testing during pregnancy and for a recovery period afterward under Army policy.

Is the Army formula the same as the Navy formula for women?

They are related circumference-based methods using similar measurements, but each service follows its own procedures and standards. Check which test applies to you.
