What is the Wind Chill Calculator?

The Wind Chill Calculator estimates how cold the air feels on exposed skin based on the actual air temperature and wind speed. It uses the North American wind chill formula and provides frostbite risk guidance.

How to Use

  1. Select your preferred unit system (Imperial or Metric).
  2. Enter the air temperature and wind speed.
  3. Click Calculate Wind Chill to see the perceived temperature and frostbite risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is wind chill?

Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air. Higher wind speeds remove heat faster, making it feel colder.

When is wind chill not applicable?

The standard wind chill formula is only valid for air temperatures at or below 50°F (10°C) and wind speeds at or above 3 mph (5 km/h). Above these values, the calculator will display a note.

How is frostbite risk determined?

Frostbite risk is based on the wind chill index. At approximately -19°F (-28°C) or below, exposed skin can freeze in about 30 minutes. The risk time decreases as the wind chill drops further.

Can wind chill cause objects to freeze faster?

No. Wind chill only affects living tissue and the perception of cold. It does not change the actual air temperature or make inanimate objects colder than the ambient air.
