What is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator helps you quickly determine the appropriate gratuity for restaurant bills, taxi rides, deliveries, and other services. Enter the bill, pick a percentage, and the tool shows the exact tip amount, the grand total, and each person's share when you split the check among a group.

Tipping customs vary by country and service type. In the United States, 15-20% is standard for restaurant service, and tips make up a large share of service workers' income, so getting the math right matters. Our calculator includes preset buttons for common percentages and updates results instantly — no mental math at the table.

The Tip Formula

Every gratuity calculation comes down to one percentage multiplication, plus an optional split among diners:

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)

Total Bill = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

Total Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People

  • Bill Amount — the check total before the tip (pre-tax subtotal or total with tax, your choice; see below).
  • Tip Percentage — the gratuity rate, such as 15%, 18%, or 20%.
  • Number of People — how many diners split the check evenly. For one person, the per-person figures simply equal the full amounts.

Worked Example: Tipping on an $85.00 Bill

Say your dinner check comes to $85.00. Here is what the three most common percentages produce:

  • 15% tip: $85.00 × 0.15 = $12.75, for a total of $97.75.
  • 18% tip: $85.00 × 0.18 = $15.30, for a total of $100.30.
  • 20% tip: $85.00 × 0.20 = $17.00, for a total of $102.00.

Now suppose four friends split the check with an 18% tip. The total of $100.30 divided by 4 comes to $25.075 per person, which rounds to $25.08 each. Because rounding each share up collects about two cents more than the bill, you can have three people pay $25.08 and one person pay $25.06 to match the $100.30 total exactly.

How Much to Tip by Service Type

Customary gratuity depends on the setting. These ranges reflect common practice in the United States:

ServiceCustomary Tip
Restaurant (sit-down)15-20% of the bill; 20% or more for exceptional service
Food delivery10-15%, with a $3-$5 minimum and more in bad weather
Bar / bartender$1-$2 per drink, or 15-20% of the tab
Taxi / rideshare10-15% of the fare
Takeout / counter serviceOptional; rounding up or 5-10% is appreciated
Hotel housekeeping$2-$5 per night, left daily

Should You Tip on the Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Amount?

Etiquette guides traditionally recommend calculating the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax goes to the government rather than to your server. In practice, many diners tip on the final total because that is the number printed at the bottom of the receipt. The difference is modest: on an $85.00 bill with 8% sales tax ($6.80), an 18% tip is $15.30 pre-tax versus $16.52 post-tax — a gap of about $1.22. Either approach is acceptable; what matters most is staying within the customary range for the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard tip percentage?

In the United States, 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. 10% may be acceptable for counter service, while 20-25% is common for exceptional service.

How can I calculate a tip in my head?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then build from there. On an $85.00 bill, 10% is $8.50, so a 20% tip is $8.50 doubled — $17.00. For 15%, add half of the 10% amount: $8.50 + $4.25 = $12.75.

Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?

Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total including tax is also common. The difference is usually small.

How much should I tip for food delivery?

10-15% of the order total is customary, with a $3-$5 minimum. Tip more for long drives, heavy orders, or bad weather, since drivers typically cover their own fuel and vehicle costs.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share of the bill first, then use the calculator for each portion separately.

Do I need to tip for takeout?

Tipping for takeout is optional but appreciated, especially at restaurants that prepare food to order. A smaller percentage or rounding up is common.

Is it okay to tip less for poor service?

Dropping to around 10% signals dissatisfaction, but speaking with a manager is usually more effective than a small tip alone. Keep in mind that tips are often pooled and shared with bussers, bartenders, and kitchen staff who may not have caused the problem.
