How Many Hours Did I Work This Week?

Add up clock-in to clock-out times, minus breaks, for an exact weekly hours total.

At a glance

The Short Answer

Subtract each day's clock-in from clock-out, subtract unpaid break time, then add the days together. A classic 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule with a 30-minute lunch is 7.5 hours per day — 37.5 hours per five-day week, not 40.

Common Mistakes When Totaling Hours

  • Forgetting unpaid breaks: a 30 or 60-minute unpaid lunch is not work time, and counting it inflates your total by 2.5-5 hours a week.
  • Rounding errors: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45 — multiply minutes by 1/60 when converting.
  • Missing short days: an early Friday finish quietly drops a nominal 40-hour week to 37 or less.

Why the Exact Total Matters

The weekly total decides whether overtime kicks in — hours past 40 are typically paid at 1.5x — and it is what your paycheck is based on. Fill in your actual clock times above and the calculator shows daily hours, the weekly total, and the regular/overtime split in one pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 9-to-5 job really 40 hours a week?

Only if your lunch is paid. With a standard unpaid 30-minute lunch, 9:00-17:00 is 7.5 paid hours a day, or 37.5 per week. A paid lunch makes it the full 8 and 40.

Do I count my commute as work hours?

No. Normal commuting is not compensable work time under federal law. Travel between job sites during the day generally is.

What if my shift runs past midnight?

This calculator assumes shifts within a single calendar day. For an overnight shift, split it at midnight and enter the two halves on their respective days.

How do I convert 7 hours 50 minutes to a decimal?

Divide the minutes by 60: 50 / 60 = 0.83, so it is 7.83 hours. The calculator's daily hours column shows this decimal form automatically.
