Average Speed Calculator With Minutes and Seconds

Enter hours, minutes, and seconds as they are — no decimal-hour conversion needed.

At a glance

Why Minutes and Seconds Matter

Average speed is total distance divided by total time, but real trips and races rarely last a round number of hours. A drive of 2 hours 15 minutes is 2.25 hours, and a 5K run of 27:42 is 0.4617 hours — converting by hand is where most mistakes creep in. This calculator accepts hours, minutes, and seconds in separate fields and does the conversion for you.

A Road Trip Example

Say you drove 120 miles in 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 0 seconds:

Average speed = 120 mi ÷ 2.25 h = 53.33 mph (85.83 km/h)

Entering those values above returns all six results instantly: 53.33 mph, 85.83 km/h, 23.84 m/s, 78.22 ft/s, plus a pace of 1:07 per mile and 0:42 per kilometer.

A Running Example

For a 5K finished in 0 hours, 27 minutes, 42 seconds, the tool converts the time internally and reports 6.73 mph and a pace of 8:55 per mile — no rounding of hours required.

When to Use Decimal Hours Instead

If your time is already in decimal form — a GPS log showing 1.75 hours, for example — just put the whole value in the hours field and leave minutes and seconds blank. The fields add together, so any mix of units produces the correct total time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator combine the time fields?

It converts minutes to hours by dividing by 60 and seconds by dividing by 3600, then adds all three fields into one total time.

Can I enter only minutes and seconds?

Yes. Leave hours at zero or blank — the calculator works with any combination of the three fields as long as the total time is positive.

Does it handle distances in kilometers?

Yes. Switch the distance unit to kilometers and the results stay consistent, with mph and min/km conversions shown automatically.

What is the difference between speed and pace?

Speed is distance per unit of time (mph); pace is time per unit of distance (minutes per mile). They are inverses of each other.
