How to Find What Percent One Number Is of Another

Part ÷ whole × 100 — the one formula behind test scores, discounts, tips, and market share.

At a glance

The Formula

To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100:

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

For example, to find what percent 45 is of 180: 45 ÷ 180 = 0.25, and 0.25 × 100 = 25%. So 45 is 25% of 180. The same math answers everyday questions: 30 correct out of 40 questions is 75%, a $12 tip on an $80 bill is 15%, and 63 million units sold out of 210 million is a 30% market share.

When the Part Is Bigger Than the Whole

The formula still works — you just get more than 100%. If your savings goal was $100 and you set aside $150, then 150 ÷ 100 × 100 = 150% of your goal. Percentages above 100 simply mean the part exceeds the reference whole.

Working Backward

If you know the percentage and the part, you can recover the whole by dividing: 30 is 15% of what number? 30 ÷ 0.15 = 200. This is handy for reverse-engineering discounts and taxes — if an 8% tax added $4.80, the pre-tax price was $4.80 ÷ 0.08 = $60.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for finding what percent X is of Y?

Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. For 45 out of 180: (45 ÷ 180) × 100 = 25%.

Does the order of the numbers matter?

Yes. 45 is 25% of 180, but 180 is 400% of 45. The number after 'of' is always the whole — the one you divide by.

Can the answer be more than 100%?

Yes, whenever the part is larger than the whole. Earning $150 against a $100 goal means you reached 150% of the goal.

How do I find the whole if I know the part and the percent?

Divide the part by the percentage as a decimal. If 30 is 15% of a number, that number is 30 ÷ 0.15 = 200.
