How to Calculate Running Pace per Mile

One division turns any finished run into the number every runner trains by.

At a glance

The Formula

Pace is simply time ÷ distance. Run 3 miles in 27:30 and your pace is 27.5 ÷ 3 = 9.17 minutes — or 9:10 per mile. The calculator above does the division and unit conversions for any distance and time you enter.

Watch Your Units

If your run was measured in kilometers, divide in kilometers first, then convert: min/mi = min/km × 1.60934. A 5K in 25:00 gives 25 ÷ 5 = 5:00 per kilometer, and 5 × 1.60934 ≈ 8.05 minutes — 8:03 per mile.

From Pace Back to Time

The reverse works too: time = pace × distance. Planning a 10K at 9:00 per mile? Expect about 6.214 × 9 = 56 minutes. The calculator also projects finish times for other race distances from any performance you enter, using the Riegel formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 10 minute mile a good pace?

It is a solid recreational pace — fast enough to build fitness and sustainable enough for longer runs. What counts as good depends on your experience and goals, not a universal standard.

How do I convert pace per mile to pace per kilometer?

Divide by 1.60934. An 8:00 mile is 8 ÷ 1.60934 ≈ 4.97 minutes, or about 4:58 per kilometer.

Why is my GPS pace different from my treadmill pace?

GPS watches average over satellite noise and can drift on turns or under tree cover, while treadmills report exact belt speed. Treadmill running also lacks wind resistance, so the same pace feels easier.

How do I calculate average pace for intervals?

Add up total time and total distance across the working segments, then divide. Averaging the per-rep paces gives the same result only if every rep covers the same distance.
