Mean Median Mode Calculator · Practical guide

What Is the Mode of a Data Set?

The mode is the value that appears most often — and a dataset can have one, several, or none at all.

At a glance

The Definition

The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset. Unlike the mean and median, the mode works on categories as well as numbers — the most popular shoe size or the most common eye color are both modes.

A Worked Example

Take the dataset 4, 7, 2, 9, 4, 7, 1. Counting frequencies:

  • 4 appears twice
  • 7 appears twice
  • 1, 2, and 9 appear once each

Both 4 and 7 tie for the highest frequency, so this dataset has two modes: 4 and 7. Data with two modes is called bimodal. The calculator above lists every mode when ties occur.

When There Is No Mode

If every value appears the same number of times, there is no mode. For 3, 5, 8, 9 each value appears once, so the mode does not exist — the calculator displays None rather than picking one arbitrarily.

Why the Mode Matters

The mode answers questions the mean and median cannot: what is the most common case? Retailers stock the modal shoe size, manufacturers design around the modal height, and teachers watch for a modal test score to see where the class actually landed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dataset have more than two modes?

Yes. If three values tie for the highest frequency, the dataset is trimodal. Any tie at the top frequency makes all tied values modes.

Is the mode always a number from the dataset?

Yes, always — the mode is defined as an actually occurring value, unlike the median of an even-count set which can fall between values.

What is the mode of 2, 2, 3, 3, 5?

There is no single mode — 2 and 3 both appear twice, so the dataset is bimodal with modes 2 and 3.

Can the mode be used for non-numeric data?

Yes — it is the only one of the three averages that works on categories. The mode of red, blue, blue, green is blue.
