How to Multiply 2x2 Matrices
Each result cell is a row of the first matrix dotted with a column of the second — here is a full worked example.
At a glance
The Row-by-Column Rule
To multiply two 2x2 matrices, each element of the result is the dot product of a row from the first matrix with a column of the second. For A x B, the top-left result cell is (row 1 of A) . (column 1 of B).

A Fully Worked Example
Take A = [[1, 2], [3, 4]] and B = [[5, 6], [7, 8]]:
- Top-left: 1x5 + 2x7 = 5 + 14 = 19
- Top-right: 1x6 + 2x8 = 6 + 16 = 22
- Bottom-left: 3x5 + 4x7 = 15 + 28 = 43
- Bottom-right: 3x6 + 4x8 = 18 + 32 = 50
So A x B = [[19, 22], [43, 50]] — exactly what the calculator above returns when you enter these values.
Order Matters
Matrix multiplication is not commutative: A x B rarely equals B x A. Flipping the same example gives B x A = [[23, 34], [31, 46]] — a completely different result. Always double-check which matrix belongs on the left.
Determinants Come Free
The calculator also reports each determinant: det(A) = 1x4 - 2x3 = -2 and det(B) = 5x8 - 6x7 = -2. A nonzero determinant means the matrix is invertible, a fact you need constantly in linear algebra homework.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you multiply a 2x2 by a 2x3 matrix?
Yes, if the inner dimensions match: a 2x2 times a 2x3 produces a 2x3. This calculator focuses on same-size square matrices, 2x2 and 3x3.
Is matrix multiplication just multiplying matching elements?
No — that is element-wise multiplication. True matrix multiplication uses row-by-column dot products, which is why it is not commutative.
What is the identity matrix for 2x2 multiplication?
It is [[1, 0], [0, 1]]. Multiplying any 2x2 matrix by it leaves the matrix unchanged, like multiplying a number by 1.
How many multiplications does a 2x2 product take?
Eight scalar multiplications and four additions — two multiplications per result cell, across four cells.
