Car Lease Calculator With Trade-In and Down Payment

Trade-in equity and cash down both shrink your capitalized cost — here is exactly how much each saves per month.

At a glance

How Trade-Ins and Down Payments Work on a Lease

Both reduce your net capitalized cost: net cap cost = negotiated price - down payment - trade-in value. Every dollar removed lowers both the depreciation you pay and the base the finance charge is computed on, so credits are worth slightly more than a dollar-for-dollar monthly reduction.

Worked Example

A car with a $40,000 MSRP, negotiated to $38,000, with $2,000 down and a $5,000 trade-in, at a 55% residual, 0.00125 money factor, 36 months, and 7% tax:

  • Net cap cost: $38,000 - $2,000 - $5,000 = $31,000
  • Monthly depreciation: ($31,000 - $22,000) / 36 = $250.00
  • Finance charge: ($31,000 + $22,000) x 0.00125 = $66.25
  • Payment with 7% tax: $338.39/month, $14,181.95 total

Without the trade-in and down payment, the same lease runs $555.81/month. The $7,000 in credits saves about $217 per month.

What Each $1,000 Saves

On a 36-month term, each $1,000 of trade-in equity or cash down cuts depreciation by about $27.78/month, plus a small reduction in the finance charge — roughly $29 per month total before tax. Over the full term that is about $1,045 back per $1,000 applied.

Should You Actually Put Money Down?

Trade-in equity has to go somewhere, but think twice about cash down: if the car is stolen or totaled in month two, the insurer pays the leasing company and your down payment is not refunded. Many advisors suggest structuring leases with little or no cash down and accepting the higher payment instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does negative equity from a trade-in raise my lease payment?

Yes. If you owe more than the trade-in is worth, the shortfall is added to the capitalized cost, raising both depreciation and finance charges. Rolling in $3,000 of negative equity adds roughly $85-90 per month on a 36-month term.

Is trade-in value taxed differently on a lease?

In many states, trade-in credit reduces the taxable amount on purchases, but lease tax treatment varies — some states tax each monthly payment regardless. Check your state's rule before assuming the credit saves on tax.

Can I lease with no trade-in and no money down?

Absolutely — that is called a sign-and-drive lease. Enter 0 for both fields and the calculator shows the higher payment that results; the first month's payment and fees are typically still due at signing.

Why is my total lease cost more than the depreciation?

Because you also pay finance charges and tax every month, plus any money down. In the worked example, depreciation totals $9,000 but the all-in cost is $14,181.95 once interest, tax, and the down payment are counted.
