How to Multiply Hex Numbers
Hex multiplication is easiest through decimal, but you can do it in base 16 directly — here's both methods.
At a glance
The short answer
The reliable way to multiply hex numbers is to convert each to decimal, multiply, and convert back. Example: FF × 2 = 255 × 2 = 510, and 510 in hex is 1FE (1 × 256 + 15 × 16 + 14 = 256 + 240 + 14 = 510). The calculator above automates all three steps and shows the decimal math it used.

Worked examples
| Hex Problem | Decimal Check | Hex Result |
|---|---|---|
| FF × 2 | 255 × 2 = 510 | 1FE |
| 3C × A | 60 × 10 = 600 | 258 |
| FF × FF | 255 × 255 = 65,025 | FE01 |
Multiplying directly in base 16
Direct hex multiplication works like decimal long multiplication with a base-16 times table. Take FF × 2: multiply each digit by 2 from the right — F (15) × 2 = 30, which is 16 + 14, so write E and carry 1; the second F × 2 = 30 plus the carry makes 31, which is 16 + 15, so write F and carry 1; the final carry becomes the leading 1. Result: 1FE. It works, but for anything longer than a couple of digits, the decimal detour is faster and far less error-prone.
Converting a decimal product back to hex
Divide by 16 repeatedly and read the remainders upward. For 600: 600 ÷ 16 = 37 remainder 8; 37 ÷ 16 = 2 remainder 5; 2 ÷ 16 = 0 remainder 2. Reading the remainders from last to first gives 2, 5, 8 — so 600 = 0x258. Enter any two hex values with the multiplication operator above and compare the steps line by line with your hand calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is FF times FF in hexadecimal?
FF × FF = FE01 in hex. In decimal that is 255 × 255 = 65,025, and 65,025 converts back to 0xFE01.
Is there a hex multiplication table?
Yes, a 16-by-16 base-16 times table exists, but most people find it easier to convert to decimal, multiply, and convert back. The calculator does this automatically and displays the decimal steps.
Can hex multiplication produce fractional results?
Multiplication of whole hex numbers always yields a whole number. Division is the operation that can produce fractions — for example 0xA ÷ 0x4 = 2.5, which is 0x2.8 in hex since 0.5 equals 8/16.
Why do hex results show a 0x prefix?
The 0x prefix is a standard programming notation marking the value as hexadecimal. It changes nothing about the number: 0x1FE and 1FE are the same value.
