Gravel Calculator: Tons to Cubic Yards

Suppliers sell by the ton, projects are measured in yards — here is the conversion both ways.

At a glance

The Conversion

Standard gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so Cubic Yards = Tons ÷ 1.4 and Tons = Cubic Yards × 1.4. Pea gravel runs lighter at about 1.3 tons per yard; crushed stone heavier at about 1.5.

Why the Density Matters

Ordering 10 tons of pea gravel yields about 7.7 cubic yards, while 10 tons of crushed stone yields only 6.7 — a full yard of difference on the same weight. Always convert using the density of the material you are actually buying, not a generic average.

Enter your area and depth in the calculator above to get cubic yards, then select your material to see tons — that is the number to quote when ordering. Round up and add 5-10% for compaction and spillage rather than ordering short.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?

About 0.71 cubic yards per ton for standard gravel at 1.4 tons per yard. Pea gravel gives roughly 0.77 yards per ton, crushed stone about 0.67.

Why do some suppliers sell by the ton and others by the yard?

Quarries weigh trucks on scales, so tons are natural for them; landscapers think in coverage, so yards. Either unit works once you apply the density conversion.

Does wet gravel weigh more?

Yes. Moisture can add 10-20% to the weight, which means a ton of wet gravel contains less rock than a ton of dry gravel. Yards are the steadier unit when material is damp.

How do I convert cubic feet to cubic yards?

Divide cubic feet by 27, since one cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. A project needing 200 cubic feet takes about 7.4 cubic yards.
