What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam?
One formula tells you the exact final-exam score required for any target grade — before you walk in.
At a glance
The Formula
The score you need on the final is Needed = (Target × Total Weight − Points Earned So Far) ÷ Final Exam Weight. Points earned so far is the sum of each finished score times its weight. The calculator above solves this the moment you leave the final's score blank.

Worked Example
Your syllabus weights Homework at 20%, Quizzes at 20%, the Midterm at 25%, and the Final at 35%. You scored 88, 92, and 81 on the finished work:
| Category | Score | Weight | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 88 | 20% | 1,760 |
| Quizzes | 92 | 20% | 1,840 |
| Midterm | 81 | 25% | 2,025 |
| Earned so far | 65% | 5,625 |
Your current average is 5,625 ÷ 65 = 86.5%. Now solve for the final:
- Target A (90%): (90 × 100 − 5,625) ÷ 35 = 96.4% — possible, but only with a near-perfect exam.
- Target B (80%): (80 × 100 − 5,625) ÷ 35 = 67.9% — comfortably in reach.
Reading the Result
If the needed score comes out above 100%, the target is mathematically gone — even a perfect final cannot lift you there. If it comes out negative, you have already locked in the target grade no matter how the exam goes. Anything between 0 and 100 is the score to beat.
Why the Weight Changes Everything
The same 86.5% standing produces very different targets as the final's weight shifts. If the final were worth only 20% (total weight 85), an A would require (90 × 85 − 5,625) ÷ 20 = 101.3% — mathematically impossible — while a B would need just (80 × 85 − 5,625) ÷ 20 = 58.8%. A lighter final leaves less room to climb; a heavier one raises both the risk and the opportunity. Enter your syllabus weights above for the exact number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my final is worth more than one category?
The formula only cares about total weights. A final worth 40% of the course simply goes in the denominator as 40; enter it as a single row with weight 40.
Can I still get an A if I failed the midterm?
Possibly. Enter your real scores and weights above — if the needed final score is 100% or less, the A is still alive. A midterm worth only 20-25% leaves a lot of course grade recoverable.
What does a negative needed score mean?
It means you have already secured the target grade. Even a zero on the remaining work keeps your weighted average at or above the target.
Should I aim exactly for the needed score?
Add a safety margin of at least a few points. The needed score assumes your recorded grades are exact; rounding and participation grades often shift the real number slightly.
