How to Calculate Golf Handicap for Beginners
Three numbers per round — your score, the course rating, and the slope rating — are all you need.
At a glance
The Basic Formula
Your handicap starts with the score differential for each round: (Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating. The differential converts your raw score into a number that accounts for course difficulty. Your handicap index is then the average of your best differentials.

A Beginner Worked Example
Say you have played five rounds at a course rated 72.1 with a slope of 130, scoring 85, 88, 90, 92, and 95. The differentials are 11.2, 13.8, 15.6, 17.3, and 19.9. With five rounds, only the lowest one differential counts, so your handicap index is 11.2. Enter these rounds in the calculator above to reproduce the result.
How Many Rounds Count
The system uses more of your rounds as you log more of them:
| Rounds Entered | Differentials Used |
|---|---|
| 3-5 | Lowest 1 |
| 6-8 | Lowest 2 |
| 9-11 | Lowest 3 |
| 12-14 | Lowest 4 |
| 15-17 | Lowest 5 |
| 18-19 | Lowest 6 |
| 20 | Lowest 8 |
Where to Find Course and Slope Ratings
Both numbers are printed on the scorecard and posted at the first tee of rated courses. Course rating estimates what a scratch golfer would shoot; slope rating (55 to 155, with 113 as average) measures how much harder the course plays for a bogey golfer. Use the ratings for the tees you actually played.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds do I need for a handicap?
You can get an initial index with as few as three rounds, though it will only reflect your single best differential. A full, stable handicap uses your 20 most recent rounds.
Is this an official handicap?
No. This is an estimate for tracking your progress. An official WHS handicap index must be issued through an authorized golf association or club.
Should I use adjusted gross scores?
For an official handicap, yes — net double bogey is the maximum per hole. For a personal estimate with this calculator, entering your total scores is fine for casual tracking.
Why does my handicap use only my best rounds?
A handicap index represents your potential ability, not your average play. Using the best differentials keeps the index reflective of what you can shoot on a good day.
