Terminating vs Repeating Decimals
Fractions whose denominators divide a power of 10 (like 8, 16, or 5) terminate neatly: 3/8 = 0.375 exactly. Denominators like 3 or 7 produce repeating decimals: 1/3 = 0.333333... forever. Six-place rounding is precise enough for measuring, cooking, and schoolwork.
Fractions to Percentages
Multiply the decimal by 100 to get a percent. That is why 3/4, 0.75, and 75% are three ways of writing the same value. The sixteenths rows are especially handy for carpentry and drill-bit sizes, where measurements are given in 1/16-inch steps.
Fractions Not on the Chart
For any fraction not listed, do the division or enter the numerator and denominator into the calculator above — the decimal equivalent appears with every result. A few more worth knowing: 1/6 = 0.166667, 5/6 = 0.833333, 1/7 = 0.142857, and 9/10 = 0.900000. Fractions with the same denominator follow a pattern: eighths step by 0.125 and sixteenths by 0.0625, so once you memorize one row, the neighbors come free.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a decimal back to a fraction?
Write the decimal over a power of 10, then simplify. For example, 0.375 = 375/1000, which reduces to 3/8 after dividing top and bottom by 125.
Why does 1/3 show as 0.333333 instead of 0.333...?
Repeating decimals go on forever, so the calculator rounds to six decimal places. The rounded value is accurate to within one part per million.
How do I convert a mixed number to a decimal?
Convert the fractional part and add the whole number: 2 3/4 = 2 + 0.75 = 2.75. Or convert to an improper fraction (11/4) and divide.
Is 0.999... equal to 1?
Yes. The infinitely repeating decimal 0.999... is exactly equal to 1 — they are two notations for the same number.
