Midpoint Between Two Coordinates

Average the x's, average the y's — the center of any segment in two easy divisions.

At a glance

The Midpoint Formula

The midpoint of the segment from (x₁, y₁) to (x₂, y₂) is simply the average of each coordinate: M = ((x₁+x₂)/2, (y₁+y₂)/2). It is the point exactly halfway between the endpoints — the same distance from each. Enter any two points above and the calculator returns the midpoint alongside the distance.

Worked Example

Find the midpoint of (−2, 3) and (4, −5). Average the x-coordinates: (−2 + 4)/2 = 1. Average the y-coordinates: (3 + (−5))/2 = −1. The midpoint is (1, −1). Verify it: the distance from (−2, 3) to (1, −1) is 5, and from (1, −1) to (4, −5) is also 5 — half of the full segment length of 10.

Where Midpoints Are Used

  • Geometry: a midpoint bisects a segment, and connecting midpoints of a triangle's sides builds the medial triangle.
  • Mapping: the natural meeting point between two locations is roughly the midpoint of their coordinates.
  • Graphics: centering an object on a line, or placing a label halfway along an edge, uses this same average.

In 3D the idea extends the same way — average the z-coordinates too: ((x₁+x₂)/2, (y₁+y₂)/2, (z₁+z₂)/2).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the midpoint always between the two points?

Yes, by construction. Averaging each coordinate places the result exactly halfway along the straight segment connecting the endpoints, equidistant from both.

Can a midpoint have decimal coordinates?

Often. When the sum of a coordinate pair is odd, dividing by 2 produces a .5 — the midpoint of (1, 2) and (4, 6) is (2.5, 4). Decimals are perfectly valid coordinates.

How is the midpoint different from the distance?

The midpoint is a point — a pair of coordinates marking the center. The distance is a single number measuring the segment's length. The calculator reports both from the same two inputs.

How do I find an endpoint if I know the midpoint and the other endpoint?

Double the midpoint and subtract the known endpoint. With midpoint (1, −1) and one end (−2, 3), the other end is (2·1−(−2), 2·(−1)−3) = (4, −5).
