Why 7 Comes Up So Often

The 36 possible combinations of two dice are not spread evenly across the sums 2 through 12. Seven has six combinations (1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 6-1), so it appears 6 out of 36 times — 16.7%. Snake eyes (2) and boxcars (12) have just one combination each, at 2.8% apiece.

Using the Odds at the Table

In Catan, the 6 and 8 number tokens produce resources most often (13.9% each per roll), which is why their dots are red. In Monopoly, the most likely roll out of jail is a 7, and doubles — any matching pair — have a 6-in-36 (16.7%) chance. Knowing the distribution will not change your luck, but it tells you where to build and when to risk a roll.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average roll of 2d6?

The expected value is exactly 7. Each d6 averages 3.5, so two dice average 3.5 + 3.5 = 7 over many rolls.

What are the odds of rolling doubles?

There are 6 doubles combinations (1-1 through 6-6) out of 36 total, so doubles come up 1 in 6 times, or 16.7%.

Is 2d6 the same as rolling a 12-sided die?

No. A d12 gives every result from 1 to 12 an equal 8.3% chance. With 2d6 the middle values are far more likely — you cannot roll a 1 at all, and 7 comes up six times as often as 12.

Can I roll 2d6 more than once and keep track?

Yes. Every roll is stored in the history panel with the individual dice and total, keeping your last 10 results visible.
