Dew Point vs Relative Humidity: What's the Difference?
Relative humidity is a moving percentage; dew point is the fixed temperature where moisture condenses — the better comfort gauge.
At a glance
Quick answer
Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated and moisture condenses — an absolute measure of how much water vapor the air holds. Relative humidity is a percentage of saturation at the current temperature, so it swings up and down all day even when the actual moisture never changes.

Same Air, Two Very Different Numbers
Morning air at 60°F might read 90% relative humidity and feel fine. By 3 PM the same air warms to 85°F and the humidity reading crashes toward 40% — yet the dew point stayed at roughly 57°F the entire time. Nothing about the moisture changed; only the temperature did. That is the core weakness of relative humidity.
Why Dew Point Is the Better Comfort Signal
| Dew point | Relative humidity | |
|---|---|---|
| Measures | Absolute moisture content | % of saturation at current temp |
| Changes with temperature? | No | Yes, constantly |
| Comfort reading | Stable: under 60°F is pleasant | Misleading without the temperature |
How They Relate
The two are linked mathematically: given temperature and relative humidity, the Magnus formula above converts them into a dew point. When relative humidity reaches 100%, the dew point equals the air temperature and fog or dew forms. Dew point can never exceed the actual air temperature.
Practical Rule
Check the dew point in the morning forecast. If it will stay under 60°F, the whole day will feel comfortable regardless of what the humidity percentage does as temperatures rise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can relative humidity be 100% without rain?
Yes. At 100% relative humidity the air is saturated, so dew or fog forms as moisture condenses on surfaces — but rain requires droplets to grow and fall, which needs cloud processes aloft.
Why does humidity drop in the afternoon?
Warmer air can hold more water vapor, so as temperature rises the same amount of moisture becomes a smaller percentage of capacity. The moisture did not leave — the measuring stick changed.
Which number should I watch for running or exercise?
Dew point. Below 60°F feels comfortable, 60-65°F makes hard effort noticeably tougher, and above 70°F even easy runs feel draining because sweat evaporates poorly.
Can dew point ever be higher than the temperature?
No. When the two are equal, relative humidity is 100%. Cooling air below its dew point forces moisture out as dew, fog, or condensation.
