Car Affordability Calculator With Trade-In
Your trade-in works exactly like cash down — it adds directly to the price you can afford.
At a glance
The short answer
Your trade-in adds dollar-for-dollar to your affordable car price. If your income supports financing $23,000 and you have $4,000 down plus a $2,000 trade-in, your maximum price is $29,000 — the trade-in raised your budget without touching your monthly payment.

How the math stacks up
The calculator works in three steps. First, it finds your max payment: 15% of monthly income minus existing debt payments. Second, it converts that payment into a loan amount using your rate and term. Third, it adds down payment and trade-in on top: max price = loan + down payment + trade-in.
| Scenario ($5,000 income, $300 debt, 6.5%, 60 mo) | Max Price |
|---|---|
| No down payment, no trade-in | $22,999 |
| $4,000 down only | $26,999 |
| $2,000 trade-in only | $24,999 |
| $4,000 down + $2,000 trade-in | $28,999 |
Trade-in value versus private sale
Dealers typically offer less than a private-party sale, but trading in often reduces the taxable price in many states and takes zero effort. Get the dealer's number before you negotiate the new car's price, and treat the two as separate transactions.
Watch out for negative equity
If you owe more on your old car than it is worth, the difference is usually rolled into the new loan — effectively a negative trade-in. That inflates the financed amount beyond what the calculator shows, so pay down the old loan or sell privately first when possible.
The safe range
Whatever the maximum, the tool's recommended range runs from 80% to 100% of it. Shopping near the low end leaves headroom for taxes, registration, and insurance, none of which are included in the price estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a trade-in lower my monthly payment?
It can, if you keep the price fixed — a $2,000 trade-in cuts about $39 off a 60-month payment at 6.5%. Or you can keep the payment and buy about $2,000 more car.
Is trade-in value taxed like a down payment?
In most states, sales tax applies to the price minus the trade-in value, which saves you money compared to selling privately and paying full tax. Rules vary by state.
Should I pay off my old car before trading it in?
If you have positive equity, the dealer handles the payoff and credits you the difference. If you are underwater, the shortfall gets rolled into the new loan and raises your costs.
How do I find my car's trade-in value?
