BMI vs Body Fat Percentage
BMI estimates weight status from height and weight alone; body fat percentage measures what the weight is made of.
At a glance
The Core Difference
BMI divides weight by height squared, so it cannot distinguish fat from muscle, bone, or water. Body fat percentage measures the actual share of fat in your body. Two people with the same BMI of 27 can have radically different compositions — one lean and muscular, the other carrying excess fat.

Where BMI Misleads
A muscular 6'0" athlete at 210 lb has a BMI of 703 × 210 ÷ 5,184 ≈ 28.5, which reads as overweight even at 12% body fat. Conversely, an older adult can post a normal BMI of 23 while carrying high body fat after years of muscle loss — the so-called "skinny fat" profile.
Healthy Body Fat Ranges
| Category | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Essential fat | 2-5% | 10-13% |
| Athletes | 6-13% | 14-20% |
| Fitness | 14-17% | 21-24% |
| Average | 18-24% | 25-31% |
| Obese | 25%+ | 32%+ |
Which Should You Use?
Use BMI as a fast, free screening tool — it tracks disease risk well across populations. If you lift weights, are over 60, or your BMI and mirror disagree, add a body fat measurement (Navy method, calipers, or a DEXA scan) for the fuller picture. The calculator above gives BMI, category, and BMI Prime in one step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can BMI and body fat percentage tell different stories?
Yes, frequently. Athletes often have overweight BMIs with low body fat, while sedentary adults can have normal BMIs with high body fat.
Is BMI still useful if I know my body fat percentage?
Body fat percentage is the more direct measure of composition, but BMI remains useful for tracking weight changes and comparing against population health data.
What is the most accurate way to measure body fat?
DEXA scans are the clinical gold standard. The US Navy circumference method and skinfold calipers are practical at-home estimates within a few percentage points.
Why do healthy body fat ranges differ for men and women?
Women carry more essential fat for hormonal and reproductive function, so every category threshold runs roughly 8-10 points higher than for men.
