How Long Does It Take to Download a 100 GB Game?

From sluggish DSL to gigabit fiber — here is how long a 100 GB download really takes.

At a glance

The Short Answer

On a 100 Mbps connection, a 100 GB game takes about 2 hours 16 minutes at full theoretical speed. On gigabit fiber (1,000 Mbps) it drops to about 13 minutes 39 seconds; on a 25 Mbps connection, plan for more than 9 hours. Enter the size and your speed in the calculator above for your exact figure.

The Math Behind It

File sizes are measured in bytes; internet speeds in bits. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, a 100 GB file is 102,400 MB × 8 = 819,200 megabits. Divide by your speed: 819,200 ÷ 100 Mbps = 8,192 seconds ≈ 2 h 16 m. The rule of thumb: at N megabits per second, you download N ÷ 8 megabytes per second — so 100 Mbps moves 12.5 MB every second.

Why It Often Takes Longer

Real downloads rarely hit the theoretical number. Game launchers and platforms throttle per-connection speed, Wi-Fi loses 20-50% of your plan's rate versus wired Ethernet, and protocol overhead adds roughly 10-20%. If your 100 GB download crawls at a tenth of the expected speed, check whether the launcher is displaying MB/s — 12.5 MB/s is 100 Mbps, not a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a 100 GB download take at 50 Mbps?

About 4 hours 33 minutes at full theoretical speed, or closer to 5-5.5 hours once you allow for overhead and real-world fluctuations.

Why does my download show 12 MB/s on a 100 Mbps plan?

Because 100 megabits per second equals 12.5 megabytes per second — there are 8 bits in a byte. 12 MB/s means you are getting nearly your full plan speed.

Does Wi-Fi slow down a 100 GB download?

Often significantly. Distance from the router, walls, and interference can halve your effective speed. A wired Ethernet connection is the single biggest improvement for large downloads.

Can I pause and resume a large game download?

Most modern game platforms support resuming interrupted downloads, so a multi-hour transfer does not need to finish in one sitting.
